The 14th edition of the Ghana Garden and Flower Show (GGFS), Ghana’s premier celebration of horticulture, floriculture, environmental sustainability and green enterprise, has officially opened in Accra.
Opening the 14th Ghana Garden and Flower Show, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, highlighted the significant economic opportunities within Ghana’s horticultural sector, noting that beyond the beauty of gardens and flowers lies an industry capable of creating businesses, jobs, skills and livelihoods. “Behind what we see are growers, skills, services, markets, and livelihoods,” she said, calling for greater support to help enterprises in the sector become sustainable businesses that can create jobs, serve larger markets and, where possible, compete beyond Ghana.
She said realizing these opportunities would require deliberate attention to the entire horticultural value chain, from production and transportation to storage, quality standards, finance and access to markets, particularly given the perishable nature of many horticultural products. The Vice President also called for greening to be integrated into development planning rather than treated as an afterthought, highlighting the role of trees, gardens and green spaces in creating healthier, more sustainable and resilient communities.
Organized under the auspices of the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement (GGFM), an initiative established and nurtured by Strategic Communications Africa Ltd. (Stratcomm Africa), this year’s Show is being held under the theme “Green Means Business, Beauty and More.” The theme highlights the need to move conversations around gardens, flowers and green spaces beyond their aesthetic value and focus attention on the significant economic, environmental and social opportunities that horticulture and the wider green economy present for Ghana.
The Show is bringing together policymakers, business leaders, horticulture practitioners, environmental advocates, entrepreneurs, development partners, educational institutions, garden enthusiasts and the public to explore the opportunities within Ghana’s growing green economy.
The Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, Mr. Augustus Goosie ObuadumTanoh, who also addressed the opening, emphasized the need for Ghana to move beyond production and build the systems, infrastructure and market linkages required for a competitive and sustainable horticulture industry. Mr. Tanoh noted that building a viable horticultural industry requires strong connections across production, aggregation, processing, logistics and markets, supported by finance, standards, skills and technology. He referred to the Netherlands and Kenya as examples of a thriving horticulture industry.
He also highlighted opportunities being explored under the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme, including plans to develop a cut-flower corridor along the Daboya-Singa pathway, linking production to the Tamale Air Cargo Hub and markets in Ghana, West Africa, Europe, the Gulf and other potential destinations. According to Mr. Tanoh, investments in infrastructure, logistics and other supporting systems will be critical to ensuring that highly perishable horticultural products can move efficiently from farms to consumers and international markets.
The Chief Executive Officer of Stratcomm Africa and Convener of the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement, Madam Esther A. N. Cobbah, said Ghana has the natural resources needed to build a thriving horticulture and floriculture industry, create businesses and generate meaningful employment opportunities.
“We have soil, we have sunshine, we have water, we have plants; therefore, we have business and we have jobs,” she said. In her view, Ghanaians need to look beyond the beauty of the natural environment and recognise the economic opportunities that can be created by deliberately harnessing these resources.
She emphasized the importance of a collective commitment to protecting and nurturing the environment that sustains these opportunities. She noted that gardens, trees and green spaces contribute to healthier, more liveable communities while supporting enterprise, livelihoods and better quality of life.
The 14th Ghana Garden and Flower Show offers visitors an opportunity to experience the business, creative and practical possibilities within Ghana’s horticulture and floriculture space. This year’s programme features exhibitions, floral and landscaping displays, a Music and Drama Night, Praise Jam in the Park masterclasses, a fashion show, stakeholder dialogues, Little Green Fingers (involving developing an interest in horticulture among children), Family Fun Day activities and a Horticulture Roundtable and Green to Riches Conference. Also on display is an HGD Home’s sponsored model eco-friendly home designed to showcase practical approaches to sustainable living.
The Horticulture Roundtable will spotlight opportunities across production, aggregation, marketing and export, providing a platform for businesses, practitioners and other stakeholders to explore potential collaborations and market opportunities.
The Show has also attracted horticulture practitioners and enthusiasts from Burkina Faso and Nigeria, creating opportunities for participants to share knowledge, showcase innovations and build connections.
Initiated by Stratcomm Africa in 2013, the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement continues to use horticulture, environmental education and community engagement to encourage greater appreciation and adoption of greener practices across Ghana.
