Five Black African Owned Fashion Brands to Know About

by Editor

With time, fashion in Africa sees emerging and already existing brands coming up with dynamic and unique styles. Following these brands, one thing I become enthused about is knowing the backstories behind whatever these brands put out. Some fashion brands promote integrity, unity, and appreciation to forbearers. In this article, I have curated five black African-owned fashion brands you need to know about.

Kayadua

Eyiwaa Agyekumhene started the Kayadua brand in 2017 after graduating from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.  She provides accessories as well as clothes. Her brand sells the message of ties we have with our families. Kayadua also portrays how a person’s behavior changes after they’re exposed to the influence of family members. Kayadua is an exceptional brand because it is geared toward promoting the message of self-acceptance and expression.

Jermaine Bleu

Jermaine Bleu is an emerging fashion brand started by Jermaine Asiedu in 2016. The brand puts together high slits, distinct patterns, and bold colors in production, creating a visual representation of modern African stories. The brand makes use of crepe and silk fabrics, leveraging Ghanaian heritage and culture for their creative fashion products.

Studio One Eighty-nine

This is another fashion brand in Ghana and the United States. The artisan-produced fashion lifestyle brand and social enterprise were founded by Rosario Dawson and Abrima Erwiah. Studio 189 produces African-inspired clothing and digital content. The brand currently operates a store in Accra (Ghana), an ecommerce site, and a manufacturing facility in Accra. With its various community-led projects in Africa and in the USA, the brand is not only interested in fashion but a firm believer in empowering people through the creation of jobs, skill training, and supporting education

Enzi

Enzi is a footwear brand that produces sneakers from quality leather and good materials. They come in different colors and types you desire. The sneakers produced are authentic because they are made from quality materials.

LaurenceAirline

Laurenceairline was started by a Cote d’ivoire designer. Using a combination of eco fabric, he creates sleek and vibrant looks for all. The brand is France, Portugal, and Cote d’Ivoire based. They make clothes for both sexes.

All these African-owned fashion brands are achieving greater heights. Let’s support our own. Be a proud African.
